Potential Post-Surgical Symptoms
- Mild Discomfort: Mild pain may be experienced in the perioral region within the first 24-48 hours post-surgery.
- Swelling and Erythema: Immediately following the procedure, the surgically treated area may exhibit swelling and redness (erythema).

- Paresthesia: Numbness (paresthesia) in the mandibular region is a temporary sensation, and the recovery period varies among individual patients.
- Sore Throat: A sore throat (pharyngitis) may be experienced in the initial post-operative period.

Post-Surgical Adherence Guidelines
- Continuous application of ice packs for 48 hours post-surgery is crucial for minimizing swelling and edema.
- Continuous wearing of a compression bandage day and night for the first 7 post-operative days is essential to expedite swelling reduction and provide facial contour stabilization.
- During the first post-operative day, a liquid diet consisting of milk, thin porridge, or soup is recommended. Subsequently, soft foods may be introduced.
- Application of petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to the lips during the initial days helps prevent dryness and chapping.
- Maintain oral hygiene with frequent warm saline rinses for the first 7 days. Avoid tooth brushing to prevent trauma to the surgical site.
- Attend scheduled follow-up appointments for the initial 3 days to allow the surgeon to monitor and cleanse the surgical wound.
- Radiofrequency (RF) therapy is recommended to reduce facial swelling and accelerate recovery. The duration of RF therapy depends on the degree of post-operative edema.
- Regular follow-up appointments are scheduled at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months. Complete and natural facial aesthetics typically manifest within 3 to 6 months.
- Excessive talking or chewing hard foods should be avoided during the first week to limit excessive movement of the mandible.
POST-OPERATIVE CARE STAGES
First 1-2 Days Post-Surgery
- Consume soft foods such as thin porridge, soup, and soft pastries to minimize wide mouth opening and the need for extensive chewing.
- Use a straw for drinking fluids, and supplement with electrolytes or Vitamin C.
- Take prescribed analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications as directed by the surgeon and according to the prescribed dosage.
- Perform gentle saline mouth rinses, continuously wear the mandibular contour compression bandage, and change dressings as instructed.
- Apply cold compresses around both sides of the jaw to help reduce swelling and pain, avoiding excessive pressure that could damage tissues.
Next 4 Days
- After 4 days, as oral muscle pain subsides, soft rice, cereals, and well-cooked savory dishes may be introduced.
- Continue to maintain regular wound care, avoid palpating the jawline, and engage in gentle ambulation to promote blood circulation.
- It is advisable to take time off work and dedicate ample time for rest and relaxation, ensuring 7-8 hours of sleep per night.
Days 7-10 Post-Jawline Contouring
- By days 7-10 post-surgery, patients can gradually resume normal daily activities. However, strenuous activities requiring significant exertion and unhealthy foods such as salty, spicy, oily foods, and alcoholic beverages should still be avoided.
- To ensure continued mandibular stabilization, wear the mandibular contour compression garment for 4-6 weeks and diligently maintain oral hygiene, thoroughly cleansing the surgical site.
- Furthermore, patients should adhere to the scheduled follow-up appointments with the surgeon to promptly detect any unusual complications.
POST-OPERATIVE NUTRITIONAL GUIDELINES
- First 2 Days: Consume only pureed porridge, thin soups, and fruit juices. Throughout this period, limit mouth opening to no more than 1 cm during eating.
- Food can be ingested using a small children’s spoon or a large-bore syringe. The focus for these 2 days is on swallowing without any chewing.
- Days 3-7: Continue with a liquid diet, ensuring no chewing is required; the food should easily pass into the mouth.
- Days 7-15: Introduce soft rice, thin porridge with grains, and soft side dishes that require minimal chewing, avoiding excessive jaw movement that could affect the wound or become lodged in the teeth.
- Throughout the liquid diet phase, incorporate the consumption of ample fruit juices and finely pureed green vegetables to supplement essential nutrients such as vitamins A, B, C, D, E, and K.
- Recommended fruit juices include: orange, tangerine, grapefruit, kiwi, grape, and papaya.
- Pureed vegetables to incorporate include: carrot, tomato, sweet potato, broccoli, spinach.
- Ensure adequate water intake to promote good circulation.
