What is circumcision?
The foreskin is the skin that covers the glans penis when a man is young. The foreskin will automatically retract when the man is between the ages of 4 and 5. If at this age the foreskin has not yet automatically retracted, immediate surgical intervention is required.
Circumcision is only a minor surgery to remove the foreskin covering the glans penis. Circumcision is performed in adults or children, and healthy people.
In adults, circumcision is performed when inflammation of the foreskin occurs, stenosis (i.e. the foreskin has not fully retracted from the glans penis), or tight foreskin (when the foreskin cannot be pulled down).
When should we undergo circumcision?
One of the most concerning issues of men nowadays is when they should undergo circumcision. Worry not! The following cases should undergo circumcision:

- Long foreskin (also known as redundant prepuce): This condition occurs when a man reaches puberty but the foreskin has not been retracted, at this time the foreskin still covers most of the glans penis. Long foreskin occurs even when the penis is erect, the foreskin must be pulled down by using hands. The length of the foreskin makes it impossible for men to have sex, so circumcision is necessary.
- Phimosis: this pathological condition occurs when the foreskin is too tight, the penis is covered by the foreskin that cannot be exposed (this condition is also known as phimosis), or it is only exposed half of the glans penis.
- Paraphimosis: This condition occurs when the foreskin is tight and if the foreskin is pulled down, it cannot return to its original position. Tight foreskin prevents it from returning to its normal position, obstructing blood circulation and causing the penis to be swollen. This condition is very dangerous, men need to undergo circumcision immediately.
- Repeated inflamed foreskin: due to many reasons that cause the foreskin to be inflamed. In such cases, men must undergo circumcision immediately.
- Circumcision can be applied to treat penile cancer.
Men should undergo circumcision right away if there occur these conditions.
The circumcision procedure
A standard circumcision procedure is extremely important to ensure a successful surgery.
The circumcision procedure is as follows:
- Step 1: Clinical examination, the doctor shall summarize the circumcision procedure.
- Step 2: The doctor shall clean and disinfect the penis and the foreskin.
- Step 3: The doctor numbs the and performs the circumcision surgery.
- Step 4: The patient will be monitored and taken care of after circumcision.
Benefits of circumcision
There are not lots of people who know the benefits of circumcision and when they should undergo circumcision. So what are the benefits of circumcision?

- Reducing the risks of infection in the glans penis: after undergoing circumcision, it will reduce the number of bacteria under the foreskin, thereby reducing the risks of inflammation in the penis area or inflammation of the foreskin.
- Reduces the risk of HIV infection: Circumcision has been shown to reduce the risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections such as HIV.
- Lowers the risk of penile cancer: Circumcision reduces the number of bacteria and the risks of chronic inflammation, so the risk of cancer will be lower.
- Improve the safety and quality of sex: Circumcision increases sexual pleasure and improves the quality of sex.
Self-care instruction after circumcision
After the circumcision procedure, the doctor shall instruct the patient on how to do post-operative care. Patients need to fully follow the doctor’s instructions to ensure the best result. Specifically:
- After the surgery, the patient needs to rest for 10 days for the penis to heal. For 3-4 days after surgery, the patient must take medicine to reduce pain and swelling.
- Patients should not have sex for at least 1 month after undergoing circumcision. Especially to prevent the wound to rub on the pants, the patient should use Vaseline to apply around the glans penis, wear loose and thin pants for the first 2-3 days.
- If after circumcision, the patient has a mild fever, redness, and prolonged soreness in the wound, it is necessary to immediately contact a doctor for timely treatment.
